FAFSA Contributors for Divorced Parents, Stepparents and Independent Students

The FAFSA asks for information from the student and from required contributors, and choosing the wrong parent is a common mistake. This page explains the official rules for divorced or separated parents, stepparents and students who may be independent.

The more than 50% financial support rule

If parents are divorced, or never married and not living together, the parent on the FAFSA is the one who provided more than 50% of the student's financial support during the last 12 months. This may not be the parent the student lived with.

Child support or alimony counts for the parent who pays it. That parent, and their current spouse if any, report their financial information as contributors.

If neither parent provided more than half of the support, including when neither provided any, the parent with the greater income and assets is the required contributor.

Stepparents and surviving parents

A stepparent counts as a parent if married to the student's biological or adoptive parent and included in the student's family size. A stepparent who did not adopt the student cannot be the sole parent for dependency purposes.

If one parent dies, the student remains a dependent of the surviving biological or adoptive parent, not of the stepparent.

Who is independent for 2026-27

A student is independent if, among other criteria, they were born before January 1, 2003, are married (not separated) as of the application date, will be a graduate or professional student, are a veteran or on active duty for purposes other than training, or have children or dependents other than a spouse.

Other criteria include being an orphan, ward of the court or in foster care at any time after age 13, a legally emancipated minor or in legal guardianship, or determined to be unaccompanied and homeless or at risk of homelessness on or after July 1, 2025.

In unusual circumstances, a financial aid administrator can treat a student who meets none of these criteria as independent.

Questions fréquentes

Can a student who is only engaged answer married on the FAFSA?

No. An engaged student should select single (never married), unless they complete the form after their marriage date. A relationship that meets the common-law marriage criteria of the student's state counts as married.

When does military service make a student independent?

Veterans are independent, using the Department of Veterans Affairs definition. A student who will become a veteran by June 30, 2027 also answers yes. ROTC students and current military academy students are not veterans.

What happens if a student selects the unusual circumstances question?

A student who answers yes to Question 7 can skip the parent sections of the form. The financial aid administrator then decides whether an independent status determination is justified.

Are National Guard or Reserve members considered veterans on the FAFSA?

Only if they were called up to active federal duty by presidential order for a purpose other than training. The length of that active duty does not matter, and returning to reserve status afterwards does not change it.
