Motorcycle mechanics: maintenance, torque specs, oil changes and troubleshooting by model (L'Atelier)
Practical motorcycle maintenance guides from L'Atelier: service intervals, torque specifications, oil and brake-fluid standards, chain, valve, tyre and spark-plug care, model-specific sheets (BMW, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, KTM, Triumph...), fault diagnosis, and the paperwork for buying, selling or importing a used bike. Built for DIY riders, apprentice mechanics and small workshops who need exact figures and step-by-step procedures rather than general advice. This assistant answers practical motorcycle maintenance questions: service intervals, torque values, tyres, chain care, oil, brakes and fault diagnosis, with model sheets for BMW, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, KTM, Triumph and more. It is meant for DIY riders, apprentice mechanics and small workshops who want exact figures and step-by-step procedures. Every answer comes from L'Atelier's guides (la-telier.com), curated by Kopik with the publisher's agreement.
Servicing by mileage, not by date
L'Atelier's guides treat a motorcycle service as a mileage interval (or yearly if you ride little). For a modern 4-stroke, the basic service comes every 6,000 to 12,000 km depending on the manufacturer: oil and filter, checks, chain cleaning and lubrication.
Around 20,000 km you add wear parts: brake pads (replace under 1.5 mm), air filter and spark plugs (nickel plugs around 20,000 km, iridium around 40,000 km). Around 40,000 km comes the major service: valve clearance, coolant and the chain kit.
Brake fluid is the exception to the mileage logic: it absorbs moisture, so it is changed every 2 years regardless of distance covered. Always confirm the exact interval for your model, since it varies by brand and generation.
Doing the basic services yourself is realistic: oil and filter, chain lubrication and tension are rated easy, pads, air filter and plugs medium. Valve clearance is best left to a professional, especially on a 4-cylinder where access means removing many parts. Keep the receipts for parts and note each operation with its date and mileage, so the service book stays credible when you sell.
Tyres: pressure, wear and age
Pressures are measured cold, before riding or after at least 2 hours standing. Typical cold ranges are 2.0 to 2.5 bar at the front and 2.2 to 2.9 bar at the rear, but the label on your bike or the owner's manual gives the exact figure.
The TWI wear indicators are small bars moulded in the grooves at 0.8 mm. In France and most European countries, the legal minimum is 1 mm of tread, but wet grip drops well before that point.
The DOT code on the sidewall gives the week and year of manufacture (DOT 2524 means week 25 of 2024). The guides advise against fitting a tyre more than 5 years old, even if it looks new, because the rubber hardens. New tyres need about 100 km of gentle riding to lose their mould-release agents.
Chain care in three habits
Lubricate the chain every 500 km and after every ride in the rain, with a motorcycle-specific chain spray applied to the inner face of the links. Clean it first with a chain cleaner and a soft brush, never with a pressure washer, which destroys the O-rings.
Slack is measured on the side stand, halfway between the two sprockets: 25 to 35 mm on most models. Too tight wears the gearbox output bearing, too loose risks the chain jumping off.
A chain is worn once it has stretched more than 2%: if you can pull it back from the rear sprocket and expose more than half a tooth, it is finished. Always replace the full kit (chain and both sprockets), as a new chain on a worn sprocket wears twice as fast.
Torque values and model sheets
The guides give general torque ranges, such as 60 to 75 Nm for a front wheel axle, 100 to 150 Nm for a rear axle and 12 to 18 Nm for spark plugs. These ranges are wide because thread size and materials differ between manufacturers, so the workshop manual value for your model is the one to use.
Model-specific sheets (Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09, Honda CB500F, NC750X and Africa Twin, Kawasaki Z650 and Versys 650, BMW R1250GS, KTM 390 Duke, Triumph Tiger 900 and others) list indicative intervals, torque settings and known weak points. Ask the assistant with your exact model and year to get the matching figures.
Questions fréquentes
Can I still use motorcycle tyres that look fine but are 6 years old?
L'Atelier's guides say a motorcycle tyre should not be fitted if it is more than 5 years old, even if it looks brand new. Rubber hardens over time and loses grip, especially in the wet. Check the four digits after DOT on the sidewall to find the week and year of manufacture.
How often should motorcycle brake fluid be changed?
Every 2 years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air, which lowers its boiling point and can lead to brake fade.
Can I use WD-40 on my motorcycle chain?
No. WD-40 is a penetrant, not a lubricant, and it attacks the chain's O-rings. Thick bearing grease is also a bad choice because it traps dust and forms an abrasive paste. Use a motorcycle-specific chain spray.
Is tightening by feel good enough?
The guides put the margin of error of tightening by feel at 20 to 40%, even for an experienced mechanic. On a brake calliper, too much strips the threads and too little lets it loosen while riding. Choose a torque wrench where the target value sits in the middle third of its range.
When should brake pads be replaced?
At the intermediate service level (around 20,000 km), pads are checked and replaced when the lining is under 1.5 mm. Front and rear are replaced depending on their own wear.
Why does valve clearance matter so much?
Too much clearance makes the valve open less: the engine loses efficiency and ticks when cold. Too little and the valve does not fully close when hot, so gases leak and the valve can overheat and burn. Clearances are always checked with the engine cold, at top dead centre on the compression stroke, using feeler gauges.
Is there a roadworthiness test for motorcycles in France?
Yes, the guides note that the motorcycle roadworthiness test (contrôle technique, often called MOT in the English pages) has been mandatory in France since 2024. It covers braking, lighting and signals, emissions and noise, tyres and steering, among other points. For tyres, the French legal minimum tread is 1 mm, with 2 mm recommended.
