Used motorcycle inspection: documents, VIN, mileage and test ride

Buying a used motorcycle is often a good deal, as long as you check the papers and the machine methodically. The assistant helps you prepare the visit and spot the warning signs before you pay.

Answers are written by a language model solely from this base's documents, with numbered sources. They can be wrong and aren't legal, medical or financial advice: check the sources before any important decision.

Papers, VIN and ownership first

Before the visit, ask for the registration document, the service book with invoices and the number of previous owners (more than 3 in a few years is a warning sign). The seller must be the registered owner, or show written proof of power of attorney.

The VIN stamped on the frame at the steering column must match the papers exactly, with no sign of grinding or re-stamping. Depending on the country, a recent clear-title certificate from the seller shows the bike is not pledged against a loan. If anything does not match, the guides say to walk away.

Inspect it with a cold engine

Ask the seller not to start the bike before you arrive: a warm engine hides starting problems, noises and smoke. On a cold start, light white smoke is condensation, blue smoke means oil consumption and black smoke a rich mixture. A metallic rattle at idle can mean a failing cam chain tensioner.

Look at the bike head-on to check wheel alignment, inspect welds, the upper yoke and ground-down footpeg brackets for crash signs. Check fork seals for oil, steering head bearings for clunks, and brake fluid colour (honey is fine, dark needs changing).

Do not trust the odometer alone

A low reading proves nothing. Compare it with real wear: shiny worn grips, scuffed footpegs or gear lever, compressed seat foam, worn brakes or a transmission that is either very worn or suspiciously new.

Service invoices and roadworthiness records must show mileage that rises logically over time; a figure that drops between two invoices is a red flag. If wear and history do not match, treat the mileage as unknown and negotiate, or walk away.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy if the seller refuses a test ride?

No, the guide's advice is to walk away. During the ride, look for clean acceleration, strong and balanced braking, no abnormal vibration in the bars and gears that all engage without force.

How do I check wheel bearings on a used bike?

With the bike on a centre stand, grab each wheel and try to move it sideways: there should be no play. Spin the wheel by hand, it should turn freely and silently.

Is a very low price a good sign?

The guides list a price more than 20% below market value as a reason for suspicion, along with a seller in a hurry, "racing" modifications on a recent bike and "a small noise that's normal".

What should the engine do once warm?

After about 5 minutes, idle should be stable without swings of more than 100 rpm, with no metallic noise. With the clutch pulled, every gear should engage cleanly and neutral should be easy to find.
