Motorcycle won't start: step-by-step diagnosis, from battery to relay

A motorcycle that won't start is usually not a serious failure, and L'Atelier's guides recommend testing from the simplest cause to the most complex. The assistant walks you through that order and helps you read the symptoms.

Start with what is easy to forget

Before suspecting anything mechanical, check that the kill switch is on RUN, the side stand is up, the clutch lever is pulled (required on most models) and neutral is displayed. These safety features deliberately cut the starter and explain many "failures" that are not failures at all.

The recommended order then runs: battery, fuses and connections, starter and relay, fuel, spark plugs, air filter, and only at the end compression and ignition. Following it avoids replacing parts at random.

Testing the battery properly

A charged battery reads 12.6 to 12.8 V at rest. Below 12.4 V it is weak, and below 12.0 V it is discharged. A dim dashboard, a horn that won't sound or a starter turning slowly all point to the battery first.

The resting test is not enough: measure the voltage while pressing the starter. If it drops below 10.5 V during cranking, the battery is dead even if it showed 12.5 V at rest. On some recent models, the ECU refuses to activate the relay below 11.8 V.

Fuses, relay and safety switches

The starter relay usually sits under the seat or near the battery and should give a solid click when you press the button. No click means the command is not reaching it (button, kill switch, side stand or clutch switch), the relay is faulty, or the main fuse is blown.

A fuse can look intact and still be blown, so test it in continuity mode. Dirty or misadjusted safety switches cause around 20% of starting failures according to the guide; cleaning the contacts often solves it.

Frequently asked questions

What does a rapid click-click-click mean when I press the starter?

The starter pinion (bendix) is trying to engage but lacks the power to turn the engine. The guide gives three possible causes: a borderline battery, a seized bendix or a worn starter ring gear. Retest the battery voltage under load first, since it is the simplest check, before suspecting the starter itself.

Can I check my battery without a multimeter?

Yes, with the headlight test: lights on, engine off, and watch for 5 minutes. Visible dimming means the battery is failing. Other signs include a slow starter, a dashboard that flickers during starting, and a bike that starts warm but not cold.

How do I read a fuel injection blink code?

On many Japanese motorcycles, the warning light blinks long for the tens and short for the units: two long and three short means code 23. Numbering differs between Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki, and a code points to a circuit, so check connectors and ground before replacing a sensor.

The bike turns over but won't fire, where do I look?

Check the fuel level (the gauge can mislead), the fuel tap on manual models, and on older carburettor bikes, fuel that has gone stale over several months and clogged the jets. Then inspect the spark plugs, which are a quick check.
