Power tools & garden machinery: chainsaw, mower, battery and tractor maintenance (L'Atelier)

This base covers maintenance, diagnostics and buying decisions for chainsaws, brush cutters, hedge trimmers, mowers, leaf blowers, cordless battery platforms and compact to large farm tractors: 2-stroke fuel mixes, chain sharpening values, hydraulic, PTO, oil and coolant intervals, and used-tractor checklists. It is written for homeowners, landscapers, farmers and small-engine repair shops who need exact ratios, pressures and intervals. Curated by Kopik from L'Atelier's content (la-telier.com), with the publisher's agreement.

This assistant answers practical questions about chainsaws, brush cutters, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, petrol mowers, cordless battery platforms and tractors, from compact models to large farm machines. It is meant for homeowners, landscapers, farmers and small-engine repairers who need a precise figure, an interval or a diagnostic order. Its answers come from L'Atelier's guides and model sheets (la-telier.com), curated by Kopik with the publisher's agreement.

Chainsaw chains: angles, files and when to replace

Sharpening is the job you will do most often on a chainsaw, roughly every 2 to 3 tanks. Dust instead of proper chips is the classic sign it is due.

The file diameter follows the chain pitch: 4.0 mm for 1/4" and 3/8" LP (Picco), 4.8 mm for .325", 5.2 mm for 3/8" and 5.5 mm for .404". The cutting angle depends on the wood: 25Β° for hardwood or dirty wood, 30Β° as the all-purpose angle, 35Β° for softwood. The tilt angle is generally 10Β° downward, and standard depth gauge height is 0.65 mm (it varies by chain).

File forward only, 2 to 3 strokes per cutter, with the same count on every cutter, starting from the shortest one. Replace the chain when cutters are filed below 2 mm, when teeth are broken or after hitting a nail, rock or concrete. A chain typically handles 3 to 4 full sharpenings.

Small engines that refuse to start

A 2-stroke engine needs a spark, fuel and compression. For a brush cutter, the guides check in order: spark plug, air filter, stale fuel mix, clogged carburetor, primer bulb, then ignition coil (air gap 0.3 to 0.4 mm to the flywheel magnets).

A chainsaw that starts then stalls is most often a clogged fuel filter, then carburetor setting, saturated air filter, plugged tank breather and, rarely, an overheating coil. If it refuses to restart when hot, first check the technique: choke open on a warm engine, or you flood it.

For petrol mowers, 90% of spring starting problems come from degraded fuel left in the tank and carburettor over winter. Either run the engine dry or fill the tank with stabiliser before storage.

Tractor PTO, tires and starting faults

The power take-off has two ISO-standard speeds: 540 RPM (6-spline shaft) and 1000 RPM (21-spline shaft), both 35 mm in diameter. Never connect a 540 RPM implement to a 1000 RPM output. Driveshaft cross joints are greased every 50 hours or before each season with lithium EP2 grease; black grease coming out signals a worn joint.

Tire pressure follows one rule: the lowest pressure compatible with the load. For a 100 to 150 HP tractor, indicative rear pressures are 0.8 to 1.2 bar for plowing and 1.2 to 1.6 bar on the road. Water ballast is filled to 75% of tire volume.

When a tractor will not start, the guides split the problem in two: a starter that does not turn points to the battery (below 12.0 V it lacks energy), the starter motor or safety relays; a starter that cranks without firing points to the fuel filter, glow plugs, injection or timing.

Compact tractor and seasonal routine

Compact tractors (15 to 50 hp) are simpler to maintain than large farm tractors. L'Atelier's table gives an oil change every 100 to 200 hours or once a year, air and fuel filters every 200 to 400 hours or yearly, coolant every 1,000 hours or 2 years, and greasing every 50 hours or monthly.

Most compact tractors use 10W-30 or 15W-40 CI-4 diesel oil, but some recent Kubota models require 10W-30 CK-4, so check the manual. Grease the steering pivots, hitch joints and PTO shaft with NLGI 2 lithium grease, 3 to 4 pumps per fitting.

Before the season, a 20-point checklist covers fluids, filters, electrics, mechanics and running gear: a battery above 12.4 V engine off, 13.8 to 14.4 V engine running, and tires that typically lose 0.2 to 0.4 bar during storage.

Frequently asked questions

Which chain sharpening angle should I use if I am not sure?

Use 30Β°. L'Atelier describes it as the universal angle that suits about 80% of situations. Switch to 25Β° for hardwood or dirty, sandy wood and to 35Β° for softwood and fast cutting.

Why does my chainsaw cut crooked?

Usually because of asymmetric sharpening: one side filed at a different angle or with different cutter lengths. Check symmetry at every sharpening.

Should I use the choke to restart a warm chainsaw?

No. On a warm engine, closing the choke floods it immediately. Start with the choke open and light throttle. If it is already flooded, pull several times at full throttle, choke open, to purge it.

What should I check on a used tractor before buying?

L'Atelier lists 15 points, from engine hours, oil condition and a cold start to hydraulics, PTO, transmission, tires, brakes and service records. Milky oil suggests water in the oil, and metal flakes mean advanced internal wear. Hydraulics are singled out as the item that ruins a used purchase.

My DPF regeneration keeps failing. Is the filter dead?

Not necessarily. The guide recommends checking first the exhaust temperature sensor and the pressure differential sensor, then the post-injection doser and diesel quality. A tractor that only works at light load may never reach regeneration temperature. DPF cleaning or replacement comes only as a last resort.

Why does my leaf blower refuse to start after summer?

The main culprit is fuel that aged over the summer. Drain the old mix and prepare a fresh one at the correct 2-stroke ratio, then cold start with the choke closed and a few priming pulses, opening the choke as soon as it catches.
