Tractor hydraulics troubleshooting: sinking lift, weak loader, filters
Hydraulics drive the loader, three-point hitch, steering and often more on a modern tractor. This page covers the symptoms, the 4-step diagnostic order and the filter intervals described by L'Atelier.

Symptoms and what they point to
A hitch drifting down usually means an internal leak at the hitch control valve or a faulty check valve. Lift a heavy implement and shut off the engine: a drop of more than 20 mm in 10 minutes confirms an internal leak.
Oil above 80Β°C points to a clogged cooler, a relief valve stuck open or a cavitating pump. Whistling means cavitation, knocking excessive pressure, rumbling a worn pump. Typical working circuit pressure is 180 to 200 bar; steering and brakes run at 120 to 160 bar.
Diagnostic order and filters
Check the basics first (oil level, return filter, oil condition, leaks), then pressure, then flow. Good flow with low pressure means an internal leak; low flow and low pressure mean a worn pump. About 60% of hydraulic problems come from contamination.
Change the return filter every 500 hours or annually, the high-pressure filter every 1000 hours; clean the suction strainer every 1000 hours and replace it every 2000. Always change the return filter after opening the circuit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I tighten a leaking hydraulic fitting a bit more?
The guide advises against it: you risk cracking the thread or crushing the seal.
Can I mix hydraulic and transmission oils?
Do not mix oils. Hydraulic and transmission circuits sometimes share the same oil (UTTO/STOU), but not always, so check your model.
What does a used return filter tell me?
Inspect it when you remove it: metal particles indicate abnormal wear. A weakening pump sends particles through the circuit and can damage valves, cylinders and hydraulic motors.
