Cordless tool battery storage and platform compatibility guide

Lithium-ion tool batteries are sensitive to how they are stored and only work within their own platform. This page sums up L'Atelier's advice on storage, lifespan and compatibility between brands and systems.

Storing batteries over winter

Never store a battery at 100% or fully empty: aim for about 40 to 60% over winter. A battery left flat all winter can become irretrievable.

Keep batteries between 10Β°C and 25Β°C, dry, away from frost and temperature swings. Separate them from the tool. Self-discharge is about 1 to 2% per month, so check once during winter and top up if needed.

Platforms and compatibility

Batteries only work within the same platform. Stihl AP (professional) and AK (consumer) are incompatible despite both being 36V, as are Makita 18V LXT and 40V XGT. DeWalt FlexVolt batteries are backward-compatible with 20V MAX tools.

Third-party adapters are not recommended: overheating risk, voided warranty, no tool and battery communication.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a pro lithium-ion battery last?

500 to 1,000 charge cycles, which is 2 to 4 years in daily professional use and 5 to 8 years for personal use.

What are the end-of-life signs of a tool battery?

Runtime down more than 30% compared to new, abnormal heating, a charger that refuses to charge, or fast drain at rest.

What should I do in spring with stored batteries?

Recharge fully before resuming use. A battery that has lost a lot of charge over winter is a sign it is nearing the end of its life.
